USPS rates in NesoTMS: what works today and what doesn't
NesoTMS asks USPS for published prices on the same boxes as your other carriers, so a lightweight parcel can be compared across UPS, FedEx and USPS in one list. USPS labels are different: buying real USPS postage is off in NesoTMS, and labels are available only in USPS's test environment. This page says exactly where that line is, so you can decide whether USPS belongs in your setup yet.

What the USPS integration does today
Connect a USPS developer app on the Carriers page and NesoTMS shows USPS offers on each fulfillment's ship page: USPS Ground Advantage, Priority Mail and Priority Mail Express, with their prices, next to your UPS and FedEx offers. The prices are USPS's published Commercial or Retail prices, whichever you choose on the account. NesoTMS doesn't resell USPS rates and doesn't add a fee.
By default a USPS account is Rates only. USPS offers carry a note that label purchase is unavailable, and they can't be selected for purchase. A packer who sees USPS is cheapest for a parcel buys the label from USPS outside NesoTMS, and NesoTMS doesn't update NetSuite for that shipment.
Who it is for
USPS rates are useful to teams that ship light parcels and want to see whether USPS beats UPS or FedEx before they pick a service. The sandbox labels are for administrators who are preparing a USPS account to buy labels later and want to check that their setup works. If you need to buy USPS labels for real shipments today, NesoTMS can't do that yet.
How to connect USPS
A NesoTMS administrator does this once on the Carriers page, under Add carrier.
- 1
Create a USPS developer app
In the USPS Developer Portal at developers.usps.com, create an app and copy its consumer key and consumer secret. USPS published prices need no account number, so the form doesn't ask for one.
- 2
Add the account in NesoTMS
Choose USPS under Add carrier, enter the consumer key and secret, choose Test or Production, and choose the prices: Commercial (online postage) or Retail (Post Office counter).
- 3
Choose the services
Turn on the USPS services to quote. Each enabled service is a separate call to USPS, so enable only the ones you use.
- 4
Test the connection
Test connection asks USPS for a sample rate, which checks your keys.
What is supported
| Part | What NesoTMS does |
|---|---|
| Services | USPS Ground Advantage, Priority Mail and Priority Mail Express. |
| Prices | USPS published Commercial or Retail prices. Contract prices aren't supported. |
| Boxes | Rates up to 10 boxes at a time. Each box is priced and the totals added, and a service shows only when every box has a price. |
| Size and weight | Boxes up to 70 lb and 130 inches of length plus girth. NesoTMS sends the box's sides to USPS longest first. |
| Addresses | US ship-from and ship-to only, using five-digit ZIP codes. |
| Labels | Rates only by default. Sandbox labels, as 4 x 6 PDFs, one box each, on a Test account with Commercial prices and the USPS payment IDs entered. |
| Real USPS postage | Not available. Production label purchase is switched off in NesoTMS. |
What you need
- A USPS developer app with its consumer key and consumer secret.
- For rates: nothing else. No USPS account number is required for published prices.
- For sandbox labels: the Test environment, Commercial prices, the label option set to Sandbox labels, and five USPS payment identifiers: the payer CRID and EPS account, the label owner CRID and MID, and the manifest MID. The form checks their digits, and the card never shows them again.
- For sandbox labels as well: USPS has to enable Payments and Domestic Labels for your app first. Until then Test connection fails its payment check, and that is USPS's setting to change, not NesoTMS's.
- A NesoTMS administrator to add the account. Members can see USPS offers afterwards.
Why labels are sandbox only
Buying USPS postage needs USPS to enroll your company for label purchase and payment, and the production side of NesoTMS's USPS label code is switched off until that has been proven end to end. A sandbox label is made in USPS's test environment: it lets an administrator check the payment setup and see a USPS label come back, and it is a test label, not postage you can use to ship a parcel.
Sandbox labels never touch NetSuite. The label shows Not sent to NetSuite and there is nothing to retry, so a test purchase can't change a real fulfillment. USPS also states that its label call isn't idempotent, which is why NesoTMS saves a request ID before it sends any label request and never retries one by itself.
What happens in NetSuite
Nothing. Rating reads the fulfillment and writes nothing. Because USPS labels are sandbox only, no USPS purchase ever updates the shipping cost, package lines, tracking number or ship status on an item fulfillment. If a packer ships a fulfillment by USPS, the label is bought outside NesoTMS and NetSuite is updated the way you do it today. The NetSuite integration page describes what a UPS or FedEx purchase writes.
Limitations
- No real USPS labels. Production label purchase is off, and sandbox labels are for testing.
- Sandbox labels are one box at a time, although rates cover up to 10 boxes.
- A declared value must be empty to see USPS rates: NesoTMS doesn't price insurance, special services or flat-rate packaging.
- US addresses only, and only the three services above.
- Published prices only. USPS contract prices aren't supported.
- No USPS tracking in NesoTMS yet.
- USPS can limit a service for a particular parcel. A service missing from the list isn't proof that USPS can't carry it, so check with USPS when a parcel is close to the size limits.
Cost
USPS rates are included in every plan. Basic is $99/month with two connected carrier accounts and Advanced is $499/month with unlimited accounts. There is no per-label or per-rate fee from NesoTMS. See pricing for the full comparison.
Where to verify
The carriers page lists USPS as rates today, with labels in testing. Test connection on the Carriers page checks your own USPS keys, and with sandbox labels on it also checks the payment authorization without buying anything. The interactive demo shows USPS-style offers next to UPS and FedEx with made-up rates.
USPS questions
Can I buy USPS labels in NesoTMS?
- Not for real shipments. USPS production label purchase is switched off. An administrator can enable sandbox labels on a Test account to check the setup, but those labels can't ship a parcel.
Do I need a USPS account number?
- No. Published prices need only the consumer key and secret of a USPS developer app. Sandbox labels also need five payment identifiers from USPS.
Why don't I see USPS rates for a box with a declared value?
- NesoTMS's USPS quotes don't include insurance, so a declared value on the box hides USPS offers. Clear the value to see them.
Does USPS appear next to UPS and FedEx?
- Yes. USPS offers sit in the same list and are marked Rates only, so you can compare the price and still buy a UPS or FedEx label from the same screen.
