Rate shopping across your own carrier accounts

NesoTMS asks every carrier account you have connected for a price on the same boxes at the same time, and lists the answers side by side: service, cost, transit time and a Cheapest mark. It is for NetSuite teams that ship parcels and the occasional pallet and want the right service chosen in seconds, not by opening four carrier websites. The prices come from your own carrier accounts, so they are your rates.

What rate shopping does

When someone opens an item fulfillment in NesoTMS, one search goes to every enabled carrier account at the same time: UPS and FedEx parcel, USPS, and FedEx Freight for pallets. The offers come back in one list, with the carrier, the account and whether it is a Test or Production account, the service, the delivery estimate and the price. The cheapest offer you can buy carries a Cheapest badge and is selected for you, so a packer who agrees with it only has to click Buy & print.

The price shown is the negotiated rate when the carrier returns one for your account, and the published rate otherwise. NesoTMS doesn't sell rates of its own: every offer is a quote from a carrier account that belongs to your company, and the carrier bills you directly.

Who it is for

It is built for NetSuite warehouses that hold accounts with more than one carrier and currently pick a service by habit or by a rate table nobody updates. It also suits teams that ship mostly parcels but need a freight quote when an order is a pallet, because parcel and freight offers appear in the same list and can be told apart with a Rate type switch.

How it works

  1. 1

    Open a fulfillment

Start from the Clerk Station, or from a Quick ship shipment if you ship without a NetSuite order. The ship page shows the addresses, the boxes and the rates side by side.

  2. 2

    Check the boxes

The page starts with the boxes NetSuite already has: the package lines on the fulfillment, or the cartons PackShip recorded. If there are none, a packer enters each box's length, width, height and weight. Identical boxes are one row with a quantity, and a declared value can be added per box.

  3. 3

    Let the rates load

Rates load by themselves once every box has a length, width and height, and again, after a short pause, whenever something changes. Get rates also works on demand, including a quote from weight alone.

  4. 4

    Compare and choose

Read the offers, filter between All, Parcel and LTL, and choose which carrier accounts to rate with. The Cheapest offer is preselected, or the service mapped to the order's NetSuite ship method, and a packer's own pick is kept when rates refresh.

  5. 5

    Buy

Buy & print buys the selected service. If you change the boxes, the residential setting or the carriers after the rates loaded, Buy turns off and the page asks for fresh rates, so you never buy at a price for different boxes.

Ship methods, freight classes and Canada

Your NetSuite ship methods are your own names, such as NDA or Best Way. In the Import step you can map each one to Cheapest or to a specific service from your carrier accounts. When an order's ship method has a mapping and a buyable offer for that service exists, the cheapest such offer is preselected, and a line by the selected service says why, for example Order ship method: NDA to UPS Next Day Air. When no offer matches, the cheapest is selected and the line says that too.

Freight estimates are never preselected until their details are entered. Booking a pallet needs a description, a class, a handling-unit type and a piece count for each unit. By default each unit is classed by its density on the NMFC density scale. You can instead fix one class on the carrier account, or pick a class on a package row. Every estimate lists the classes it assumed, and the page notes that the carrier bills the class the freight actually ships at.

For a US-to-Canada shipment, UPS rates don't depend on customs. FedEx's Canada rates need the invoice's commodity lines, so once the customs items, net weights and export reference are filled in, the FedEx offers appear, and until then the rates panel says what FedEx still needs.

Quick ship and batch imports

On Quick ship's New shipment screen, where you ship without a NetSuite order, offers can be sorted by lowest price, fastest or best value, with Cheapest, Fastest and Best value badges. Best value is the cheapest offer that is at most one business day slower than the fastest. A batch import rates each order with your parcel accounts, preselects one of those choices for every order, and keeps any rate a person picked by hand.

What you need

  • At least one carrier account connected on the Carriers page, with its own keys from the carrier's developer portal. Each carrier's page lists what it asks for.
  • A ship-from and ship-to address on the order, and box sizes: from NetSuite, from PackShip, or typed by a packer.
  • For freight, the carrier account's registered billing details and, to book, each handling unit's details and a pickup arrangement.

What happens in NetSuite

Nothing, until you buy. Looking at rates reads the fulfillment and writes nothing, and the rates themselves are not saved in NetSuite. When a label is bought, NesoTMS writes the chosen label's cost, the package lines with their weights, sizes and tracking numbers, and the Shipped status to the item fulfillment. The NetSuite integration page lists every field.

Limitations

  • A quote is the carrier's estimate. Your carrier invoice is what you actually pay, and freight estimates are never final charges.
  • Rates come only from carrier accounts you connect. NesoTMS doesn't resell carrier rates.
  • UPS and FedEx labels cover the US and US-to-Canada only. Other international lanes are quoted as rates only.
  • USPS labels are sandbox only today, USPS contract prices aren't supported, and USPS quotes need an empty declared value.
  • If one carrier returns an error, the other carriers' offers still show, with a message about the one that failed.
  • Services a carrier can quote but NesoTMS can't buy are marked Rates only and can't be selected for purchase.

Cost

Rate shopping is in every plan. Basic is $99/month and includes two connected carrier accounts; more are $50/month each. Advanced is $499/month with unlimited carrier accounts. There is no per-label fee: you pay your carriers for the labels you buy. See pricing for the full comparison.

Where to verify

The interactive demo lets you compare made-up rates and buy a sample label in your browser, without connecting anything. The carrier pages (UPS, FedEx, FedEx Freight and USPS) list the services each carrier rates and buys, and the Test connection button on the Carriers page checks your keys against the carrier before you ship anything.

Rate shopping questions

Will I see my negotiated rates?

You see what the carrier returns for your account: the negotiated rate when there is one, otherwise the published rate. USPS prices are published Commercial or Retail prices, because contract prices aren't supported.

Do I have to enter box sizes?

Automatic rates need each box's length, width and height. If NetSuite or PackShip has them, they are filled in. If not, a packer types them once, and you can still press Get rates for a weight-only quote.

How many carriers can I compare?

Every connected, enabled account is asked in the same search. Basic includes two connected carrier accounts and Advanced has unlimited.

Why can't I select some offers?

Those services are marked Rates only. The carrier quotes them, but NesoTMS can't buy them, for example UPS SurePost, USPS labels outside the sandbox, or services outside a carrier's label list.
