FedEx Freight LTL booking from NetSuite

When an order is a pallet, not a stack of boxes, NesoTMS shows FedEx Freight LTL estimates in the same list as your parcel rates. Once the handling-unit details are entered you can book the shipment with FedEx Freight, print its labels and bill of lading, and write the tracking numbers back to the NetSuite item fulfillment. It is for NetSuite teams that ship some orders as freight and hold a FedEx Freight account.

What the FedEx Freight integration does

FedEx Freight is FedEx's less-than-truckload service, with its own portal, its own keys and its own account. Once an account is connected, every fulfillment is also rated for LTL: the offers for FedEx Freight Priority and FedEx Freight Economy appear beside your UPS, FedEx and USPS rates, and a Rate type switch separates Parcel from LTL.

Freight estimates stay estimates until you add details. You turn on Freight handling units on the ship page, describe each unit, choose a ship date and a pickup arrangement, and refresh the rates. Then you can book. Booking returns one label for each handling unit and the bill of lading as PDFs, and stores them in NesoTMS for printing and reprinting.

Who it is for

It fits NetSuite warehouses that ship mostly parcel but sometimes send a pallet, a crate or a skid, and want a freight quote without leaving the order. It doesn't try to be a full freight desk: it rates and books FedEx Freight shipments from the United States, it doesn't schedule the truck, and it can't cancel a booking through FedEx's systems.

How to connect and book

  1. 1

    Get FedEx Freight keys

FedEx Freight has its own developer portal at developer.fedexfreight.com. Create a project there and copy its client ID and secret. FedEx parcel keys don't work for Freight.

  2. 2

    Add the account in NesoTMS

On the Carriers page, choose FedEx Freight. Enter the account number (up to nine digits), the client ID and secret, and the registered billing company, phone and address of the account. Choose how rates class a unit, by density (the default) or one fixed class, and the default handling unit.

  3. 3

    Test the connection

Test connection quotes one pallet from the account's registered billing address, because FedEx Freight only quotes from the location on the account. A Canadian billing address checks the keys only.

  4. 4

    Describe the freight

On the ship page, turn on Freight handling units and enter, for each unit, a commodity description, the freight class, the handling-unit type, the pieces inside it, its size and weight, and optionally an NMFC code. Choose the ship date and the pickup arrangement.

  5. 5

    Refresh rates and book

Get fresh rates, choose Priority or Economy, and click Buy & print. NesoTMS books the shipment, prints the labels and the bill of lading, and updates NetSuite.

What is supported

PartWhat NesoTMS does
ServicesFedEx Freight Priority and FedEx Freight Economy, estimated and booked.
LanesFreight from the US. Booking to Canada also needs the customs details, an export reference you supply and an invoice you print, sign and attach.
Handling unitsBundle, carton, crate, drum, pail, pallet, skid or other. Identical units can be entered once with a quantity. A booking covers up to 10 units.
Freight classClassed by density on the NMFC density scale by default, a fixed class set on the account, or a class picked on a package row. Every estimate lists the classes it assumed.
DocumentsOne label per handling unit and the bill of lading, as PDFs. Print the bill of lading at its real page size.
PickupYou choose an arrangement: use an existing scheduled pickup, contact FedEx Freight to schedule, or drop off at a FedEx Freight location. NesoTMS sends your choice with the booking but never schedules a truck.
CancellationAn administrator cancels with FedEx Freight, then records the carrier's confirmation in NesoTMS.

Freight is for nonhazardous goods paid by the shipper. Estimates exclude liftgate, inside delivery and other extra services.

What you need

  • A FedEx Freight account and a project at developer.fedexfreight.com with its client ID and secret.
  • The account's registered billing details: company, phone, street, city, state or province, postal code and country. FedEx Freight quotes only from the location on the account, so these must match what FedEx has.
  • For each unit when booking: a commodity description, a class, a handling-unit type, a piece count, its outside size and its weight including packaging.
  • A pickup arrangement chosen before booking, and someone who actually arranges the truck with FedEx Freight.
  • A NesoTMS administrator to add the account, and again to record a cancellation.

What happens in NetSuite

A booking uses the same write-back as a parcel label: one package line per handling unit with weight, size and tracking number, and the ship status set to Shipped. It differs in one way. FedEx Freight's booking reply doesn't confirm final charges, so NesoTMS writes no shipping cost to the fulfillment instead of presenting an estimate as an invoiced amount.

When an administrator records a carrier-confirmed cancellation, NesoTMS clears that booking's tracking numbers on the fulfillment and sets the status back to Packed when no other label is active. If the NetSuite update fails, the booking stays recorded and is marked Not in NetSuite yet, with a retry button. The NetSuite integration page lists every field.

Cancelling a freight shipment

FedEx Freight offers no cancel service that NesoTMS can call. To cancel, an administrator first cancels the shipment directly with FedEx Freight and gets its confirmation. Then, on the shipment's Documents tab, they choose Record cancellation and enter that confirmation. NesoTMS saves it, voids its own record and updates NetSuite. Cancelling a pickup alone doesn't cancel the shipment, and recording a cancellation doesn't promise a fee refund. Check the carrier's actual status before you confirm.

Limitations

  • Estimates are not final charges. FedEx Freight bills the class the freight actually ships at, and a density class is only an estimate.
  • NesoTMS never schedules a pickup. Creating the labels and the bill of lading does not send a truck.
  • No cancellation through FedEx's systems: cancelling is manual and admin-only.
  • A booking covers at most 10 handling units, and declared value isn't supported for freight.
  • Booking needs every unit's details, so a freight estimate is never preselected until they are entered.
  • No shipping cost is written to NetSuite for a booking, because FedEx Freight doesn't return a final charge.
  • A booking with no clear answer from FedEx Freight stays guarded as unconfirmed and is never retried automatically, so it can't book twice.
  • UPS Supply Chain and CEVA, the other freight carriers, are coming soon.

Cost

FedEx Freight is included in every plan. Basic is $99/month with two connected carrier accounts and Advanced is $499/month with unlimited accounts. FedEx Freight bills your account directly, so NesoTMS has no per-shipment fee. See pricing for the full comparison.

Where to verify

The carriers page lists what each carrier does today, including FedEx Freight booking with its bill of lading. Test connection on the Carriers page quotes a pallet from your registered billing address before you ship anything, and the freight panel on the ship page shows the density and class for each unit as you type its size and weight.

FedEx Freight questions

Does NesoTMS book the truck pickup?

No. Booking creates the labels and the bill of lading. You choose a pickup arrangement and arrange the pickup with FedEx Freight yourself.

How is the freight class decided?

By default each handling unit is classed by its density, from its outside size and weight, on the NMFC density scale. You can instead set one fixed class on the account or pick a class on a package row. FedEx Freight bills the class the freight actually ships at.

Why is there no shipping cost on the NetSuite fulfillment after a booking?

FedEx Freight's booking reply doesn't confirm final charges, so NesoTMS doesn't write an estimate as if it were invoiced. The tracking numbers, package lines and status are written as usual.

How do I cancel a booked freight shipment?

Cancel it with FedEx Freight first, then have an administrator choose Record cancellation on the shipment and enter FedEx Freight's confirmation.
